The inability of a user to effectively use an digital library (lack
of usability) and a user’s decision to
discontinue use of an digital library (lack of continuance intention) may
result in a poor return on investment (ROI) and lost productivity,
providing a foundation for new information systems (Limayem, Hirt, & Cheung, 2003; Te’eni et al., 2007).
According to Limayem et al., IS research in the past concentrated on the
adoption phase of the systems; however, the adoption phase is only the first
phase toward IS success. If an information system does not meet the user’s
needs, it is abandoned (discontinued), even though
initial adoption was successful. Researchers, therefore, realized that they
needed to understand continuance intention. Discontinued use or lack of users’
continuance intention of an information system indicates that usability is
lacking. Khalifa (2004) stated that satisfaction, which is a strong indicator
of IS usability, has been, and continues to be, an interest to both
scholars and practitioners. Measurement of satisfaction has a long history
within the IS discipline (Chin & Lee, 2000).
